Greentech Wallboard
Greentech Wallboard™ is a commercially viable, green alternative to traditional drywall. By using an innovative and patented technology, Greentech Wallboard maintains the requisite strength, density, and cost-competitiveness of drywall produced through standard manufacturing methods.
While current drywall manufacturing processes rely on mined gypsum, Greentech Wallboard utilizes fly ash, a by-product of the coal-combustion process. It’s comprised of 98% recycled content, is naturally mildew resistant and fire retardant, and performs like conventional drywall.
Drywall is the most common indoor building material in the United States, with more than 40 million square feet produced each year. The demand is so high that drywall manufacturing now accounts for 1% of annual energy consumption in the United States. However, current drywall manufacturing techniques involve super-heating, or calcining, in gas-fired ovens. This energy-intensive process requires 100,000 BTUs or more per drywall sheet, and emits an estimated 51 million tons of greenhouse gasses each year.
The Greentech Wallboard Solution
Greentech Wallboard utilizes a new material science that doesn’t require calcining during production, vastly reducing its carbon footprint compared to standard drywall. Instead it uses fly ash, a commodity that would otherwise be deposited in landfills.
Fly ash is classified by the EPA as a non-hazardous waste, and it has been safely used for years in other building materials, including cement and concrete, structural fill, and road bases. Approximately 40,000,000 tons of fly ash are disposed in landfills each year. With Greentech Wallboard, Spertech is diverting a portion of this from the waste stream and creating something that is new, useful, and green.
